Who can access private ADHD medication?

If you’re not diagnosed

You need a diagnosis from our clinical team to begin ADHD medication with Xyla.

Once your diagnosis is confirmed, a prescriber will assess your suitability for medication. If you and your prescriber agree medication is an appropriate pathway, prescribing can start.

If you already have a diagnosis

We still need to assess and confirm your ADHD diagnosis independently before starting medication.

This ensures your treatment is safe and tailored to your needs. Our clinicians will begin prescribing only if you and your clinician think medication is suitable for you.

How our ADHD medication service works

1

Initial consultation

We’ll talk through your needs and discuss together whether ADHD assessment is right in your case.

2

ADHD assessment

If appropriateyou’ll have a full assessment with one of our experienced clinicians.

3

Prescribing consultation

After diagnosis, a prescriber will review your medication request to determine suitability for treatment. They’ll explain benefits and side effects of different options. You and your prescriber will agree on how to proceed together

4

Medication delivery

Your prescription is issued securely and sent for dispensing and delivery to your home.

5

Titration and monitoring

You’ll have at least three titration appointments to adjust your medication and make sure it works effectively.

6

Stabilisation and ongoing care

Once your medication is stable, we’ll support transferring care to your GP under Shared Care (subject to GP confirmation) or continue your care privately.

What is ADHD titration?

Titration is the process of finding the right medication and dosage for you. Treatment is increased slowly and safely to achieve the best results in reducing individual symptoms of ADHD.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get ADHD medication privately in the UK?

First, you’ll need a diagnosis from a clinician qualified to carry out ADHD assessments . In the subsequent diagnostic report, your assessor will identify suitable support and treatment recommendations for you to consider.

If you decide to explore ADHD medication after receiving a diagnosis from Xyla, a prescribing clinician will discuss whether pharmacological treatment is right for you. They will take into consideration your diagnostic report, information from your GP and other factors, such as your cardiac history, physical health, height and weight.

Do I need a diagnosis before starting medication?

Yes, medication can only be prescribed following a full ADHD diagnosis and clinical assessment.

Xyla handles the process from start to finish. We offer private ADHD assessments for adults and children and teenagers, and if deemed suitable after diagnosis, we can also help you access ADHD medication.

How long does titration take?

Titration, the process of adjusting your medication and dosage, typically takes up to three months, with follow-up appointments spaced around three to four weeks apart to monitor progress.

However, this can vary on an individual basis depending on your symptoms and a variety of other factors. In some cases, we may need to arrange additional titration sessions to stabilise your medication. Your health and wellbeing are our top priority.

Can my GP take over my prescription?

In some cases, your GP may agree to an arrangement called Shared Care once your medication is stable. In this arrangement, they take over the responsibility of prescribing and monitoring your treatment. However, we cannot guarantee this if you’ve accessed a private assessment through Xyla.

If you ultimately want to transfer to Shared Care once stabilised on medication, please speak to your GP first to find out if they would accept a request.

What does private ADHD medication cost?

Costs include £650 for initial prescribing and titration, plus ongoing prescription or review fees. The cost of medication and dispensing is charged separately by the pharmacy.

You can view pricing for private ADHD assessments and treatment options on our pricing page.

Where do I collect my medication?

Our service at Xyla focuses on accessible ways to get the support and treatment you need. That’s why we offer remote assessments that can be completed from the comfort of your own home – and we apply that same principle to accessing medication.

Our partner SignatureRX delivers ADHD medication to your door within 1-2 working days of your prescription being issued. No trips to the pharmacy needed.

Is ADHD medication safe?

For many people ADHD medication is an effective treatment, but like all medicines, it isn’t suitable for everyone and can cause side effects.

We only prescribe after a full assessment and a check of your suitability, including blood pressure and pulse. It’s started at a low dose and adjusted gradually, with regular reviews to monitor how it’s working for you. Your clinician will discuss the benefits and risks with you so you can decide together what’s right.

What other support is available?

Medication is just one way to manage ADHD. Alongside our medication service, Xyla offers specialist-led post-diagnostic support: personalised, one-to-one online sessions that help you understand your diagnosis, manage everyday challenges and build confidence.

Post-diagnostic support is available for adults, teenagers and children aged 7 and over, including those diagnosed elsewhere.
