Not sure if your child needs an ADHD assessment?

It’s completely normal to feel unsure if your child needs an assessment or if it’s in their best interests. That’s why our expert clinicians are here to guide you. We’ll walk you through the signs and symptoms of ADHD, answer your questions and provide honest, professional advice tailored to your child’s unique situation.

If we don’t believe your child is likely to receive a diagnosis, we won’t recommend moving forward with an assessment. Our goal is to support you in making the right decision, not to put your child through a process that isn’t needed.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my child or teenager has ADHD?

Common signs may include:

  • Inattention (e.g. forgetfulness, easily distracted)
  • Hyperactivity (e.g. restlessness, excessive talking)
  • Impulsivity (e.g. interrupting, difficulty waiting their turn)
  • Emotional challenges (e.g. frustration, anger, or difficulty managing emotions)

If your child or teenager consistently shows several of these behaviours, an assessment can help identify their needs and guide the next steps.

Do I need a GP referral to get an ADHD assessment for my child??

No referral is required. However, involving your GP can be helpful, as they can provide valuable background information and assist with coordinating any follow-up care.

Is the diagnosis valid for educational support?

Yes. Schools are required to provide reasonable adjustments based on a formal diagnosis, including extra exam time or tailored teaching methods.

What happens after a diagnosis?

You’ll receive a detailed report with personalised recommendations. This might include:

  • Supportive therapy for your child to help them manage and thrive
  • Guidance for parents and/or legal guardians to help understand the diagnosis and navigate the next steps
  • Referrals to additional support services for further assistance
  • Advice on school accommodations to assist with learning
  • Information on medication (if appropriate)
Will I be able to access medication for my child?

After an ADHD diagnosis, we may recommend medication when appropriate. While we don’t currently prescribe medication, we’re working towards offering this soon. In the meantime, we provide post-diagnostic care plans and emotional and behavioural support tailored to children and teenagers.

As part of our comprehensive, ongoing care, we also offer guidance for families and schools to help support each child’s journey.

How long does a child ADHD assessment take?

Our remote clinical assessment for ADHD in children usually takes around 60 minutes, followed by a separate 30-minute feedback session. From your initial consultation to receiving your diagnosis, the full process can typically be completed within 14 days. Timeframes may vary slightly depending on your availability and individual needs.
