Post-diagnostic support sessions are supportive, clinician-led meetings designed to help young people understand and manage a recent diagnosis of ADHD, ASD, or both.
After you’ve received your diagnosis, our friendly clinicians will invite you to sessions where they will help you work towards understanding and managing your recent diagnosis, whether this is ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) or a dual Diagnosis. Neurodiversity can come with lots of big and scary words, and we want to help break these down in a way that makes sense to you.
These sessions are not about trying to change who you are but to celebrate the way your brain works and help you find ways to manage things you might find difficult.
We encourage you to bring with you to your sessions anything that will help you feel at ease, whether it’s a fidget toy or something that helps you feel safe and comfortable. Regular breaks can be agreed, and you can go at your own pace. The aim of the sessions is to find out what works best for you, in a number of areas of your life.
Our team will be in touch via telephone to arrange the first appointment, this may be just for you or with a parent or trusted adult. This session will be delivered via a secure video platform, and a link will be emailed to you once you have found a suitable time and date to hold your first session.
Your first session may feel a bit strange to start with, but your clinician will want to get to know you and how you work, together you can decide on what you would like to work on and will focus on not only things you are finding difficult but areas you are excelling in.
One part of our clinician’s work is to keep you safe, whilst what you tell them during your sessions is confidential if at any point, they are concerned that you or someone else is in immediate harm or danger they may need to break that confidentiality and tell someone trusted. Your clinician will explain all of this to you during your sessions.
If you are concerned at any time about how you are feeling or that things are feeling so overwhelming, please reach out to a trusted adult for support.
If you feel that you cannot keep yourself safe you can always go to your local Accident and Emergency Department at your local Hospital.
